You didn't say that you were in love with him. Does his former wife take care of the children or is he responsible for their care. Life give all of us many challenges and sometimes we get to choose. You didn't express what your needs are. Sometimes our lifes are enriched my commiting to a difficult situation. Maybe talking to a professional to explore any issues you may be dealing with personally would be a wise step. Best wishes
